The third edition of Surfing: a Beginners Guide has just been released. Written by Alf Anderson and originally published in 1996, it has been a popular addition to surfers' bookshelves around the world. We're happy to say that the latest edition is still packed with goodies and useful reading for those considering surfing or just beginning to learn.
The guide covers everything a new surfer needs from first time in the water to proficient surfer. The information in the book is both easy to read and understand and is accompanied by great pictures. The surfing maneuvers section contains helpful sequence shots that clearly show the surfer's various steps. The equipment pages are provided with photos and diagrams that reinforce the themes. The rest of the book features beautiful waves from around the world.
While some books focus on a specific area of surfing, such as tech or travel, Surfing: a Beginners Guide covers all the topics a surfer needs to know - both in and out of the surf. The book is divided into sections:
Equipment - surfboards, wetsuits, leashes and more
Getting Started – Prepare and get in the surf
Into the Surf - the basics of duck diving and sitting on the board
Surf maneuvers - the basics to become a competent surfer
Safe Surfing - Overcoming cracks, crowds and other hazards
Waves and weather - the types of waves and how waves are formed
Surfboard Design - Covers the basics of tail and rail shapes, bottom contours and fins. (Check out the pictures on the fin page - notice similarities...)
Care and Repair - Care of boards and wetsuits
Surf the world – a surf travel section
It's good to see that the guide is still full of useful information for new surfers and those getting their feet wet from surfing, and is sure to continue to be a must-read for young and old alike!
This edition already comes with an endorsement from Surfing England and now has one from us! worth reading
