You can find out about the different types of skimboards and other input here .
Skimboard construction at a glance:
Basically, skimboards are divided into two main types, which are defined by the material used: wood or foam.
Foam boards have better buoyancy compared to wooden boards. They are manufactured in a sandwich construction, in which a panel made of special foam is reinforced by layers of fiberglass and epoxy resin. Since their structure is comparable to conventional surfboards, they are slightly more sensitive than wooden skimboards. Due to their greater buoyancy, they are also suitable for gliding (skimming) on larger waves.
Wooden boards are heavier and are therefore suitable for flatland skimboarding. They have less buoyancy, which is why they are only used in shallow water. Since they are easy to maneuver, they are even more suitable for tricks and jumps.
Here is an overview of which skimboard is recommended for which weight. If in doubt, we always recommend buying the larger one as it glides better and is therefore more fun!
It is advisable to buy a repair kit for the foam skimboard and take it with you on vacation. It can happen that the surface of the board is injured by an impact - this must be closed again as quickly as possible so that no water gets in. Here you can find various repair kits online.
Since the surfaces of the skimboard are usually smooth, you need a surf wax to prevent slipping. This depends on the temperature - but you can find out more about it under surf wax .
In our opinion, skimboarding is extremely cool and definitely worth trying! If you would like to find out more about it, just come to our surf shop in Zurich at Stauffacher or contact us using the chat field!
