Firewire Surfboards was founded in 2005 by Nev Hyman and Bert Burger in San Diego – with a clear technological mandate: to revolutionize surfboard construction. Traditional polyurethane foam boards with polyester laminate have remained essentially unchanged since the 1960s. Hyman and Burger focused on epoxy resin and alternative core systems to build boards that are lighter, stronger, and more durable than conventional PU boards. Firewire’s LFT (Linear Flex Technology) and later the Helium core became cornerstones of the Firewire approach.

Firewire works closely with renowned shapers: Dan Mann, Tomo, Rob Machado, and Kelly Slater have all developed models for Firewire. The collaboration with Slater, in particular, led to the founding of Slater Designs in 2007 – a sub-brand within the Firewire ecosystem that has produced some of the most innovative board shapes in recent years. Shapes such as the Omni, the Cymatic, and the Banana Splitskull would not be possible without Firewire’s technology. The range includes performance shortboards, fish shapes, mid-lengths, and longboards – all in the characteristic Firewire construction method.

Firewire is also strongly committed to sustainability: TimberTek, a construction featuring a paulownia wood deck, significantly reduces the use of synthetic foams. For surfers who are conscious of their board's environmental footprint, Firewire is a compelling option.
