Xcel Wetsuits was founded in 1982 by Ed D'Ascoli in Sunset Beach, Hawaii – one of the most famous big-wave spots in the world. A surfer himself, D'Ascoli was looking for wetsuits that could withstand the extreme conditions of North Shore winters: strong currents, powerful waves, and cold water. He wasn't satisfied with what he found on the market, so he built his own. This starting point still defines Xcel today: the brand develops wetsuits primarily for people who are actually in the water, not for marketing catalogs.

Over the decades, Xcel has developed into one of the most technically advanced wetsuit manufacturers. Celliant technology—an infrared-active lining—is one example of Xcel’s approach to innovation: the material is designed to promote circulation and regulate body temperature. The Infiniti seam, Xcel’s proprietary seam system, minimizes water entry and increases durability. The range extends from affordable entry-level models and the 4/3mm Axis series to technical high-end models for cold water. Xcel also produces rash guards, neoprene boots, and gloves—all geared toward the needs of active water sports enthusiasts. Since 2007, Xcel has been part of Billabong/Boardriders.
