Reef was founded in 1984 by Argentine brothers Fernando and Santiago Aguerre in San Diego, California. The two were avid surfers and noticed that there wasn't a good sandal to wear after surfing – one robust enough for the beach and comfortable enough for everyday use. The first Reef sandals were produced in Argentina and distributed in the USA. The concept struck a chord: sandals that fit after being in the water, with good footbed support and durable material. Reef quickly became the best-selling surf sandal in the USA, establishing an entirely new product segment.

Over the years, Reef has significantly expanded its range. In addition to sandals – which remain the core product – there are now boardshorts, T-shirts, caps, and a wide line of accessories. The sandals themselves have been constantly further developed: with various footbed profiles (e.g., the Reef Cushion system), different materials, and a growing selection of closed-toe shoes for everyday wear. In 2005, Reef was acquired by VF Corporation, the same group that owns brands such as Vans and The North Face – which gave Reef access to resources for material development and global distribution.

Reef has always maintained a down-to-earth surf culture. By sponsoring surf contests and athletes like Rob Machado – one of the most stylish surfers of his generation – the brand has stayed close to authentic surf life.
