The right surf leash is crucial for your safety in the water.
It connects you to your board ā and ensures that you don't lose it after a wipeout. However, not every leash fits every setup. Length, diameter, and intended use play an important role.
Rule of thumb: The leash should be approximately the same length as your board ā or at least your height. For larger or more powerful waves, a slightly longer and sturdier leash is recommended.
The cord thickness also makes a difference: thinner leashes are lighter and have less drag, but they break more easily. Thicker leashes offer more durability ā especially in more demanding conditions.
Whether you are out with a surfboard or bodyboard ā the right leash is an essential part of your setup.
At Surfari in Zurich, you will find a carefully curated selection of leashes for various boards and conditions. If you are unsure, we are happy to help you personally ā in the shop or online.
Which leash fits my board?
The rule of thumb is: The leash should be about as long as your board. So for a 6ā0 shortboard, you should choose a 6ft leash, and for a 7ā0 funboard, a 7ft leash.
Important: The leash should be at least as long as your height. If it is too short, your board can snap back more quickly after a fall ā which increases the risk of injury.
What length do I need for larger waves?
The larger and more powerful the waves, the longer your leash should be. A longer leash ensures that your board stays further away from you and the forces are distributed better.
Especially in strong waves, this reduces the strain on the leash ā and decreases the risk of it snapping.
Thin or thick ā what is the right choice?
Thin leashes (approx. 5ā6 mm) have less drag in the water and are suitable for small waves or experienced surfers. However, they are less durable.
Medium leashes (6ā7 mm) are the best all-around choice for most conditions. Thicker leashes (7 mm+) offer maximum durability and are ideal for larger or powerful waves.
