Hurley

Bob Hurley founded Hurley International in 1999 in Costa Mesa, California – but his history in the surf industry goes back further. In the early 1980s, he was the US licensee for Billabong and built the brand in the American market. When the license expired in 1998, Hurley decided to launch his own brand – with a clear focus on innovation and closeness to the professional surf scene. From the very beginning, the Hurley name was associated with a specific ambition: to build gear for the best surfers in the world.

Hurley relied on material innovations early on and was acquired by Nike in 2002, which allowed access to Nike technologies. Nike Dri-FIT technology was incorporated into Hurley boardshorts and rash guards – for better moisture management and faster drying. The Phantom boardshort line, developed in collaboration with professional surfers, became one of the most functional boardshorts on the market. The range also includes T-shirts, hoodies, shorts, bikinis, and a broad lifestyle collection. In 2019, Nike sold Hurley to Bluestar Alliance – but the brand remained anchored in the surf segment.

Hurley is inextricably linked to the professional surf scene. Athletes like John John Florence, Kelly Slater, and Carissa Moore wore the Hurley logo on the biggest stages of world surfing. The Hurley Pro at Trestles – a WSL Championship Tour event at the famous Trestles breaks in San Clemente – is one of the most coveted competitions of the season. This close connection to professional sports also shapes product development: what works in competition eventually makes its way into the retail range.
