Futures Fins was founded by Bob Mitsven in Huntington Beach, California, in 1996 – as a direct competitor to the already established FCS system. Mitsven pursued a different technical approach: while FCS relied on a plug-in system without a fixed connection, Futures developed a single-tab system where the fin is secured in the fin box with a screw. In the opinion of many surfers, this type of connection transfers energy to the board more directly. The FCS vs. Futures debate continues to accompany the surf community to this day and is ultimately a matter of personal riding style.

Over the years, Futures has built up an extensive range of fins and works closely with professional surfers to develop signature models. Names such as Rob Machado, Jordy Smith, and Dane Reynolds are associated with specific Futures fin designs. The material range extends from fiberglass and honeycomb to high-quality carbon – with correspondingly varying flex profiles. Futures offers fin sets for shortboards, longboards, and fish shapes and has also expanded into the FCS2-compatible segment. Production takes place in Huntington Beach and in Asia, depending on the model.
