For five years, filmmaker Adam Brown followed young surfer Jhonny Guerrero through his childhood in Chorrillos, Lima - one of South America's toughest ghettos. Gangs, drugs and poverty characterize life in the barrio, which is sandwiched between a garbage dump and the beach at the gates of the Peruvian capital.
When Jhonny turns 14, his father goes to jail for a robbery. Alone with his mother and little brother, he dreams of escaping poverty in Chorillos through a career as a pro surfer. The waves are good here, but hardly any ghetto kid thinks about surfing. Only Jhonny is magically drawn to the ocean outside, starting out at age 10 on a broken piece of surfboard left on the beach by a tourist. His talent is unbelievable: at the age of 14, he was already taking part in a national contest, where he was discovered by former world champion Sofia Mulanovich and promoted from then on. The first sponsors and local successes follow.
But Jhonny's past, his family, old friends and inner turmoil keep pulling him out of his new life, back into Chorillo's swamp of crime and violence. One night he is the victim of a drive-by shooting in front of a club. He leaves town and devotes himself entirely to the dream of a surfing career. His big goal: The Junior World Championships, to which he was invited. Jhonny then learns that his father is about to be released from prison after years - will his past catch up with him this time too?
